Program Notes:

“Concerto for Viola and Piano”

(Equinox – A Seeker’s Journey)

 In its original form the “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra showcases the virtuosity and soulfulness of the viola as it intones over a mysterious orchestral background. In this new version for viola and piano, the piano assumes the entire role of the orchestra making it an equal partner in the artistic expression. Each instrument plays a contrasting role of vital importance.

The voice of the viola as protagonist portrays an individual who is learning to live with his or her own demons of fear and self-doubt. The texture of the piano suggests nature’s unpredictability as it gently and, sometimes, violently propels us through our lives. Midway through the piece, the solo viola cadenza recounts a journey of deep self-exploration and redemption that can only be gained by acceptance of one's truest identity. The piano enters again luring the viola into a much more complete embrace of reality. As the viola submits to the profound beauty of nature, the piano embodies a sublime tapestry where the viola moves freely between darkness and light.

Originally commissioned by the Burbank Philharmonic under the direction of Steve Kerstein, the “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra” was premiered by Karen Elaine in 1996.  This work is scheduled to be performed by Victor de Almeida with James Domine conducting the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra on Sat. May 24, 2014 at Scherr Forum Theatre in Thousand Oaks, 7:30 PM.

Bio - Cary Belling

Cary Belling has been active in Southern California as a composer, conductor, and violinist since 1983. His compositions have been performed by the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, the Burbank Philharmonic, the Inland Empire Symphony, the Brentwood Symphony, the Palisades Symphony, and the Pasadena Community Orchestra. Mr. Belling has received grants and awards from the American Music Center, Meet The Composer California, the American Composers Forum, and the Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division. He has also received eleven ASCAP Plus awards.

Mr. Belling has served as Assistant Conductor with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, the University Synagogue Chamber Orchestra, and the Brentwood Symphony. As a violinist, he began his professional career with the San Antonio Symphony and currently performs across Southern California, as well as internationally, with a number of distinguished ensembles including the California Philharmonic, West Lost Angeles Symphony, The Desert Symphony, and The Riverside County Philharmonic Orchestra.

Cary Belling holds a Masters Degree in Conducting from California State University at Northridge and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Texas at Austin, having graduated with High Honors. He looks forward to future performances of his works this year by the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Culver City Chamber Orchestra, and the Riverside County Philharmonic Orchestra.
