PROGRAM NOTES:

Francois Devienne (1759-1803) was an active flutist, bassoonist, and composer in Paris. In 1795 he was appointed administrator and flute instructor at the Paris Conservatory. His instrumental works are mainly written for wind instruments. The 6 Duos for Flute and Viola opus 5 are among the most beautiful and valuable contributions to this unusual duo form.

Ernst Krenek (1900 - 1991)composed the Sonatina for Flute and Viola in Poughkeepsie, New York, on January 6, 1942. It is a dodecaphonic composition incorporating Krenek’s inventive interpretations of the twelve-tone practices of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School.

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was born on the island of Fyn in Denmark. In 1881 he began his musical studies in Copenhagen, and in 1892 his First Symphony was completed. However, he never lost his regard for the Danish folk melodies of his childhood. Nielsen's  intense occupation with folk songs during 1920- 1921 resulted in the publication of the Folkhojskolens Melodibog a collection of songs primarily for Danish secondary schools and colleges. It was during this period of involvement with folk songs that Nelson wrote the incidental music, Faith and Hope Are Playing, for The Mother, a festival play by Helge Rode. The play was commissioned by the Danish Royal Theater to celebrate the region of Slesvig's reunion with Denmark in 1920, and is a poetic, openly patriotic, fairy-tale play.

Los Angeles composer and violinist Kirstin Fife wrote Indoor Games for the Glendale Noon Concert series during the Covid pandemic. It was first performed on July 1, 2020 for the Glendale Noon Concerts and since has been featured in recital programs for the Santa Barbara Symphony and Community Outreach programs in Northwest Ohio.

ARTIST BIO: https://www.keeswieringa.com/

Kees Wieringa is a Dutch pianist, composer, writer and cultural entrepreneur.
He came to prominence for his performances of the Dutch composers Jakob van Domselaer, Daniel Ruyneman and Simeon ten Holt.
Kees Wieringa graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1986. He has built an international career over the years with his piano recitals and compositions.
In 2010, Kees Wieringa premiered the opera Drebbel. The main character of the piece is the Alkmaar-educated inventor Cornelis Drebbel (1572–1633) (performed by rock singer Thé Lau), who was interested in themes of alchemy and spiritualism. "Wieringa was inspired by the early Baroque music with its polyphonic while emotional musical lines. Composers such as Monteverdi and Handel sound along while today intervals, chords and rhythms can be heard, reminding the minimal music of Philip Glass."
Kees Wieringa was museum director of the Kranenburgh Museum in Bergen, and since 2016 has been the director of the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum in Qatar. Wieringa has also organised and curated an exhibition 'The Majlis - Cultures in Dialogue' together with UNESCO. It was featured all over the world. PROGRAM NOTES:

TANGO SOZINHO – Adrienne Albert (b. 1941)

Originally composed in July of 2020 and conceived as a piece for solo oboe, Los Angeles based composer, Adrienne Albert reworked this composition for saxophonist, Doug Masek, in 2021. “Originally, I thought the title of this work would be "Alone", as, sadly, this terrible Covid virus has forced school music programs and professional organizations to rethink the way musicians are able to play together for the foreseeable future.” ... Adrienne Albert

COLTRANE – David Heath (b. 1956)

Born in Manchester, England, David Heath began writing music in 1975, basing his music harmonically and rhythmically on the music of jazz saxophonist, John Coltrane and jazz trumpeter, Miles Davis.  COLTRANE was written in 1981 and is a musical tribute to John Coltrane. The first half is blues-based while the second half is influence by North Indian music.

BEFORE TIMES – Bill Cunliffe (b. 1956)

Written for Doug Masek in 2022, by Grammy-Award winning jazz pianist and arranger Bill Cunliffe, “Before Times” is what many of us called the pre-pandemic world.  But, in addition, I had the weird ear worm with the harmonic progression loosely based on a 70’s Lionel Ritchie tune called Hello. The harmony of it is very much something that could have been a passacaglia in the day.” ...Bill Cunliffe

BLUE CAPRICE – Victor Morosco (b.1936)

Born in New York City, composer and saxophonist Victor Morosco wrote BLUE CAPRICE in 1981.  It was written to be a virtuosic solo similar to a Paganini caprice but based on the Blues, hence BLUE CAPRICE.  A Theme and Variation premise, the work is an anthology of historical jazz with references to Bebop, Gospel, Kansas City, and Chicago styles.
