BRENDAN WHITE Solo Piano Recital
ARTIST BIO:
Noah Breneman is a freelance oboist based in Los Angeles. He currently holds the positions of 2nd Oboe with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Principal Oboe with the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, Noah attended The Pennsylvania State University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelors degree in Oboe Performance. In 2018 he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a Masters degree at the University of Southern California, which he completed in Spring 2020 amidst the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2025 Noah played two weeks on trial with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in Örebro, Sweden, a rare opportunity for an American-born oboist. Locally, he performs as a substitute with groups such as the Reno Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His teachers include Jill Haley, Tim Hurtz, Joel Timm, and Marion Kuszyk. In addition to his career as an oboist, Noah works in the marketing department of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Music Buyer for the LA Phil Store. In this role, he curates the physical media selections for the retail stores at both Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
PROGRAM NOTES:
This recital features works written for unaccompanied oboe from the 20th and 21st centuries. Nine New York City Miniatures by Gary Powell Nash began with the seventh movement, "A Million Numbered Streets", written in 2014. In 2020, Dr. Nash added the other seven movements, creating a suite of miniatures for oboists to perform alone during the COVID-19 pandemic. Movement titles such as "Spreading the News" and "Hustle and Bustle" reflect themes of New York City. Dr. Nash is professor of Music Theory and Technology at Fisk University in Tennessee.
The Piper of Dreams was written in 1940 by English composer Ruth Gipps (1921-1999) based on a painting of the same name by Estella Canziana. Gipps was a multi-talented musician, performing professionally on both oboe and piano, composing, and conducting. Her compositional style, based in the pastoral style of her teacher, Ralph Vaughan Williams, did not fare well among avant-garde styles popular at the time. This, paired with female discrimination, pushed her music to the background during her lifetime. Her compositional output includes five symphonies as well as a host of chamber music, solo works, and concerti for wind instruments.
Ernst Krenek (1900-1991) was born in Vienna though he lived the majority of his life in North America, becoming a US citizen and eventually settling in Palm Springs, California. His compositions were influenced by a variety of styles over his lifetime, but it was a jazz-influenced opera which labeled him a "degenerate" composer by the Nazis in 1938 causing his subsequent emigration. Krenek's Sonatina, written in 1956, is in four short movements with atonal influences.
Edson Beltrami is a flutist and composer based in Brazil where he is the assistant conductor and principal solo flutist with the Bachiana Philharmonic in São Paulo. Três Lendas or Three Legends, written in 2014, depicts three different characters of Brazilian folklore. The first movement, Saci-Pererê, is a one-legged prankster boy with a magical red cap that allows him to disappear and reappear wherever he wishes. The second movement, O Canto de Sereia, or The Siren's Song, depicts the entrancing song of the water-spirit Iara. The third movement, A Cuca, represents an old alligator-woman who kidnaps and eats naughty children. The monster's roar is depicted three times through the extended technique of multiphonics.
