ERGO MUSICA:

ADRIANA ZOPPO – viola d’amore

MORGAN LITTLE – baroque cello

Duos for Viola d’amore and Violoncello

Manuscript PNM A 199

Tempo Moderato
Menuetto
Presto

No. 21 in F Major……anonymous

Tardissime
Menuetto & Trio
Adagio
Allegro

No. 13 in G Major……anonymous

(circa late 18th century)

Allegro Moderato
Menuetta & Trio

Variazzione

These Duos are from a collection of 48 duos for Viola d’amore and Violoncello from Manuscript PNM A 199  in the Czech Museum of Music and have been edited and transcribed by Thomas Georgi. Except for one, all of the duos are anonymous. Though it is familiar to us now, the concept of intellectual property was not prevalent in the 18th century or supported by the law, so it was not unusual for composers to leave off their name, as is the case with these duos, but from the general style and certain compositional techniques, it can be deduced they are from the 18th century, Classical Period of music, as are composers such as Mozart and Haydn. They range in difficulty from simple, student level pieces to the more complex and difficult.  The transcription of these duos has added greatly to the repertoire for viola d’amore and are a welcome addition to the pieces that can be performed with just two players, and without needing to add keyboard.
