COMPOSER KIRSTIN FIFE BIO & PROGRAM NOTES:

Quintet For Flute and Strings By Kirstin Fife

The Quintet for Flute and Strings was composed during the early summer of 2023. It was completed on July 11, composed for a group of friends who zoomed weekly during the Pandemic (Kathy Marsh, Adriana Zoppo, Jacqueline Suzuki, Clement Chow and the composer) It is set to be premiered at the Glendale Noon Concerts on August 16, 2023, by the friends for which it was composed.

The idea behind the piece was to use a compositional devise called a Row, and then stack it into traditional harmony structures: a hybrid approach to composition. The form is a traditional 3 movement structure, with movements titled 1. Tic, 2. Tac, 3. Toe.

The first movement (TIC) adheres to a strict row for the first 12 measures. I tried to imitate the traditional “Webern” sound. Then the row is only in the bass line (mostly played by the cello). I filled in the chords with mostly added sevenths and then last composed the melody with a surprising result! The notes of the row are

F-D-Bb-C-Ab-G-B-Gb-Eb-Db-A-E
Later in the piece, the row is in retrograde. The basic form of the piece is an introduction and then there are basically two sections that alternate.

The second movement (TAC) sandwiches the row in the middle voices. The piece begins with the row in the viola part. The Row used for this movement is Bb-C-B-G-F-Ab-Gb-Db-E-A-D-Eb

The form is a ternary waltz. The B section was inspired by the Barber Adagio for Strings and then returns to a simple (albeit dark) waltz. The third movement (TOE) has the row in the melody (mostly upper voice) and presented a unique problem.

G-Ab-A-Bb-Eb-E-F-Gb-B-C-Db-D

In the time signature of 12/8, which I chose, I used up the row in one measure and then I had to generate more material. My solution was to rearrange the row into new groups of six, four, three and two. I enjoyed harmonizing my melody with chords built on a simple diatonic scale.

I had fun composing this piece, I hope it is as enjoyable for the audience as it was for me to compose!

COMPOSER BIO:

There are many wonderful violinists on the world's stages today, but not many of them compose and perform their own original compositions along with those of the master composers of centuries past.  Kirstin Fife has distinguished herself as one of these more rare musicians, consummate performer and composer.

Many of her concerts are given in an intimate setting, such as private homes and small theaters. Also, she performs in regular concert series, such as the Glendale Noon Concerts, the Pasadena Presbyterian noon concerts, the Sunday musicale series at the Newport Beach Library,  and The Sunspace Thursday night concert series.  Recently, Kirstin has been promoting and performing her performance piece, "The Major Arcana", for violin and piano, which includes a slide show to enhance the presentation.

In addition, to "The Major Arcana", Kirstin has been performing her pieces based on the art work of Salvadore Dali, with the Dali Ensemble of Los Angeles.

"Czechmate" and "Pieces of My Heart" are two CD's that she released in 1996 and 2011 respectively.  In between, were hundreds of recordings as a studio musician for movies, television, and records including "Mission Impossible",  "Jag" Star Trek:The Next Generation", "Michael Jackson"  and many others too numerous to mention.  On camera, she has appeared on "American Idol", "Tonight Show", and  "The Voice", and others.   Also, she has performed for all of the major awards shows, including the Academy Awards, The Emmy Awards, the Country Music Awards, and the Grammy Awards (with Prince and Bruno Mars).

Kirstin loves to perform for charitable causes, these have included "Alzheimer's Foundation" "The Red Shirt Project" and "Hope Gardens.  She welcomes the opportunity to do much more of this kind of work.

Kirstin Fife is in the business of creating, recording, performing and teaching.  Her CD's are available on iTunes.  Original compositions and arrangements are available on sheetmusicplus.com.
