ARTIST BIO:

Born in Kent, Ohio in 1981, Jonathan Flaksman began playing the cello at the age of 5. His father, Michael Flaksman, a world-renowned cellist and teacher, was one of the major influences of his teaching and playing.

He has also studied under many other world-class musicians including Madalena Burle-Marx, Richard Aaron, Fred Sherry, Harvey Shapiro, Siegfried Palm, Bernard Greenhouse, Jens Peter Mainz and Ralph Kirschbaum. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Juilliard School and the University of Mannheim in Germany.

Flaksman was awarded fellowships to attend festivals and master classes throughout the U.S. and Europe, including Interlochen Arts Camp and music festivals in Portogruaro, Aspen, Schleswig-Holstein and Łancut, Aurora Chamber Music and Bayreuther Festspiele. He played in various orchestras in Germany, including the Nationaltheater Mannheim, Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, and the philharmonics of Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen, gaining invaluable musical knowledge and experience.

He performs regularly at the Ascoli Piceno Festival in Italy.

 

In 2015 he was appointed assistant principal cellist of the Santa Barbara Symphony and moved to Los Angeles. Other orchestras include the Pasadena Symphony and Pops, Modesto Symphony,  New West Symphony, and the New Mexico Philharmonic.

Flaksman records for major motion pictures and music albums, and plays, composes, arranges and produces music of all genres.

He is a renowned cello teacher and coaches strings and chamber music. He has given master classes in Germany, Italy, and the USA. His students have been accepted to major universities, and have won positions in leading orchestras and competition prizes.

He is also a ski instructor and yoga teacher.

ARTIST BIOS:

 

Flutist Katherine Marsh is an active professional musician and teacher. She is currently the solo piccolo player of the Santa Barbara Symphony, principal flute of the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Santa Barbara Grand Opera and Master Chorale, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, as well as other symphony and chamber ensembles throughout Southern California.

Originally from Bowling Green, Ohio, Ms. Marsh received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music Degree from the University of Southern California. Her principal teachers include Bonita Boyd, Samuel Baron, Roger Stevens, and Louise DiTullio. She was a member of the LA Philharmonic Orchestral Training Program and was selected to perform in The Round Top Music Festival and the Orchestral Institute in Graz, Austria. In addition Ms. Marsh has performed in masterclasses with James Galway, Jean Pierre Rampal, Sarah Jackson and Catherine Karoly.

This past November Katherine premiered James Domine’s Flute Concerto with the San Fernando Valley Symphony. Her piccolo and flute playing can be heard in many Star Wars Video games performing with the Skywalker Orchestra. In addition to orchestral work, Kathy is a member of the California Music Teacher's Association and is a coach for Junior Chamber Music. She recently served as a board member for the Arts High Foundation.

Patrick Marsh received his bachelors degree in viola performance from the University of Michigan and the masters degree from The Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins as a viola major.

As a violist, Patrick was one of the founding members of "Clemens Quartet," a string quartet performing and competing throughout the United States.

As a violinist, Patrick is a former concertmaster of The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. His performance opportunities have taken him across the United States, Europe, and St. Petersburg Russia.
Though classical music is the foundation of his technique, you will find him branching out into the Jazz and Rock generes. Patrick plays a blue Fourness Fuse 5string electric violin and runs it through a Line6 Helix for effects, and 2 Gallien Krueger bass amps in stereo.

Patrick can also be heard as a featured soloist in such feature films as "Kids vs. Monsters" and "Pali Road" as well as such video games as "Rellics of Gods" and Disney's "Cartooniverse."

PROGRAM NOTES:

 “The Faithful Music Master” was intended to include various types of musical pieces for the use of both singers and instrumentalists. It appeared in the form of a lesson approximately every two weeks by Telemann in 1728 and was probably the first music journal in history. The purpose of such a periodical was to satisfy the needs of as many different chamber music combinations. This duet is from the ninth and tenth lesson of “The Faithful Music Master”.

Giuseppe Maria Gioacchino Cambini is considered one of the greatest curators of the Symphonie Concertante. This music is an example of entertaining music with an emphasis on expressive singing in performance, very popular in Paris from 1770 to 1780. The 6 Duos are charming examples of this style and allow the performers much freedom with dramatic expression and technique.

Ernst Krenek composed the Sonatina for Flute and Viola in Poughkeepsie, New York, on January 6, 1942. It is a dodecaphonic composition incorporating Krenek’s inventive interpretations of the twelve-tone practices of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School.

Ignaz Joseph Pleyel was born in Austria in 1757. His father sent him to study music in Vienna and in 1772 Pleyel was sent to board and study with Joseph Haydn in in Eisenstadt. Pleyel’s Duos op. 44 of 1796 were originally for violin and viola. Many arrangements of this version were made by the composer, including the one for flute and viola.
