ARTIST BIO:

A winner of the Beverly Hills Auditions of the Consortium of Southern California Chamber Music Presenters, Adriana Zoppo performs on the violin, viola, baroque violin, baroque viola, and the rarely heard viola d’amore. She has played regularly with the Santa Barbara, Pacific, and Long Beach Symphonies, Pasadena Pops, Long Beach Opera, St. Matthew Chamber Orchestra and other ensembles in the area. Director/Curator of the Glendale Noon Concerts’ early music sub-series Adriana, with Ergo Musica, is heard there frequently. Previously a member of the Carmel Bach Festival and L.A. Baroque Orchestra, she plays with the original instrument ensembles Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, L.A. Baroque Players, Bach Collegium San Diego and the Corona del Mar Baroque Festival, where she has appeared as viola d'amore soloist.  Adriana has played for motion pictures, TV shows, video games, solo artist recordings, Broadway musicals, and live shows of all musical styles from classical to jazz, and was part of the band for the musical Hamilton during its recent run in Los Angeles. Adriana holds a Bachelors degree from U.S.C. and Masters from the University of Michigan, both in violin performance.

PROGRAM NOTES:

Studio Modale (Dante Publications) was composed and performed in 1982 by Aurelio Aricidiacono (1915-2000) for the First International Viola d’amore Congress of the Viola d’amore Society of America. In addition to viola d’amore, he taught and performed on violin and viola and wrote several other pieces for the viola d’amore.

Composed in 1949, the Studio-Capricco No. 8 is taken from his 16 Studi-Capricci  
(Amore Publications 1990)  written “…to show to advantage the sonic qualities of the viola d’amore…[and] for developing a modern viola d’amore technique.”

 

A contemporary of Mozart, Carl Stamitz (1745-1801) studied violin, viola d’amore and composition with his father, a well-known composer and performer with the famous Mannheim Orchestra in Germany. Carl played violin, viola and viola d’amore at a virtuoso level and as a composer, he had great success in Paris, London and other cities in Europe. Despite that, he died so heavily in debt that his possessions had to be auctioned to help pay it off.

 

Though a double bass player for the Paris Opera and known to be an excellent violist d’amore, Anton Huberty (1722-1791) is known more as a composer and music publisher and engraver in Paris and Vienna, publishing the works of popular composers, including those of the famous Mannheim School. The Duetto for two violas d’amore is from a collection published by Huberty comprised of music by him and other composers. There are indications the Duetto is not Huberty’s, but as there is no composer indicated, it has been attributed to him.
