Patrick Marsh received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music degree from The Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins as a viola major. As a violist, Patrick was one of the founding members of the Clemens Quartet, a string quartet performing and competing throughout the United States.

As a violinist, Patrick is a former concertmaster of The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.  His performance opportunities have taken him across the United States, Europe, and St. Petersburg Russia. Patrick is also a jazz fusion artist, performing extensively on electric violin.

Program Notes:

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) wrote his 15 Two-Part Inventions while working as the court orchestra director in Kothen. The inventions are contrapuntal pieces, arranged in order of ascending keys, covering the eight major and minor keys. Invention No. 5 in Eb Major features many of the ornaments and embellishments that were popular in Baroque music. Originally written for keyboard, this arrangement was adapted for violin and viola by Nanae Iwata in 2016.

Francois Devienne (1759-1803) was an active flutist, bassoonist, and composer in Paris. In 1795 he was appointed administrator and flute instructor at the Paris Conservatory. His instrumental works are mainly written for wind instruments. The 6 Duos for Flute and Viola opus 5 are among the most beautiful and valuable contributions to this unusual duo form. Duo No. 4 in F Major is unique in that it begins with a slow movement (Adagio). The other five duos are comprised of two fast movements.

Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) was a Belgian violinist and composer. Based in Paris, Vieuxtemps composed and performed throughout Europe. He later resided in St. Petersburg and worked as a court musician for Tsar Nicholas I. There he founded the violin school of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. His Capriccio in C minor for Solo Viola opus 55 (opus 9 posthumous) is a great example of romantic solo virtuosity and was written to honor Paganini after his death.

Ignaz Joseph Pleyel (1757-1831) was an Austrian composer and piano manufacturer. Between 1785 and 1795 Pleyel composed and worked as a capellmeister in Vienna. In 1795 he moved to Paris and opened a music shop and later founded the Pleyel Piano Factory, where Chopin made his Paris debut in 1831. One of Pleyel’s great publishing feats was the first complete edition of Joseph Haydn’s 83 string quartets. Pleyel’s Duos opus 44 were originally written for violin and viola. The duos were very popular, so Pleyel was asked to provide alternate arrangements for the publisher, including versions for two flutes, harp and piano, two violins, and flute and viola.
