Isaac Pastor-Chermak leads a diverse and active musical life at home in Northern California and around the United States. A quintessential 21st-century artist, he engages deeply as a cellist, teacher, conductor, and administrator, motivated by an abiding love of sharing great music with friends and collaborators.

Though he is active in nearly every facet of today’s classical music profession, Mr. Pastor-Chermak is a career orchestral player. In any given weekend of the season, he can be found performing as Principal Cellist of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony; Associate Principal Cellist of the Stockton Symphony; Assistant Principal Cellist of Opera San Jose and Fresno Philharmonic; and as a member of the Berkeley Symphony, Monterey Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic. During the summer season, he is Assistant Principal Cellist at the Eisenstadt Classical Music Festival in Austria, and Principal Cellist of the Lake Tahoe Music Festival.

In the world of chamber music, Mr. Pastor-Chermak is the cellist of Black Cedar Trio, the only flute-cello-guitar ensemble in the country. He partners regularly with pianists Alison Lee and Miles Graber in sonata programs. All told, Mr. Pastor-Chermak performs more than 100 concerts a year on an 1889 cello by Riccardo Antoniazzi; a 1982 violoncello piccolo by Antonius Garcius Rosius; and a contemporary bow by Ole Kanestrom. He released three CD recordings in the year 2020 alone: the world-premiere recording of Elliott Miles McKinley’s String Quartet No.8 with the Auriga String Quartet; Backlash Bach with Red Cedar Chamber Music; and Preludes and Prologues with pianist (and fiancée) Alison Lee.

A community leader in the arts, Mr. Pastor-Chermak sits on the Board of Directors of East Bay Music Foundation and Calliope East Bay Music and Arts; through these organizations, he’s deeply involved in the cultural life of the region. Finally, he is Adjunct Professor of Music History at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he teaches popular graduate seminars in chamber music literature.

Mr. Pastor-Chermak holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (B.A. with honors) and San Francisco Conservatory of Music (M.M. with honors). He concluded his formal education in Orchestral Conducting at the University of California, Davis.

Morgan Jones is a multi-instrumentalist performer, composer and educator with degrees from The Juilliard School and USC Thornton School of Music, where he studied both piano and saxophone. He teaches piano students of all levels through his private studio, while continuing to perform, record and compose in multiple genres. Free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman mentored and prepared Morgan to be his replacement as the alto sax soloist for the world premiere of “Concerto for Ornette,” composed by Mr. Coleman’s longtime friend Carman Moore. The New York Times favorably reviewed Morgan’s performance at Alice Tully Hall, which Mr. Coleman attended. Morgan had the honor of playing tenor sax with Aretha Franklin at the Oracle Arena during her historic final tour of California. He can be heard on baritone sax on Panic! At the Disco’s album Pray for the Wicked, including the 4x-platinum single “High Hopes.” Morgan is currently the jazz pianist for the American Contemporary Ballet. He served for several years as the gospel choir director, pianist and organist for Hamilton United Methodist Church and Faith UMC. He regularly plays with funk band Scary Pockets as well as their sister band Pomplamoose, and is a longtime collaborator of singer-songwriter Heather Porcaro. He and Tamir Hendelman often play as a piano duo, presenting original arrangements of Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. He has played with a host of other jazz luminaries including Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Mulgrew Miller, Joshua Redman, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Peter Erskine, Cyrus Chestnut, Jimmy Heath, and Jimmy Cobb. He has performed at the Apollo Theater, Blue Note Jazz Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Catalina’s, the Blue Whale, Carnegie Hall, and many others. His TV and movie credits include American Idol, The Voice, Glee, N.C.I.S, 10 Things I Hate About You and Burlesque. His original compositions are featured in the indie thriller Mojave, starring Oscar Isaac. Morgan’s passion for music education began at Juilliard, where he studied music pedagogy with Dr. Ed Bilous and taught in New York City public schools through the Morse Teaching Artist Fellowship. As co-chair of the Music and Medicine Initiative with Weill Cornell, he also led symposia on synesthesia, performance anxiety, and perfect pitch. His piano mentors include Tamir Hendelman, Frank Kimbrough, Daniel Pollack, Sergey Smilansky, Alan Pasqua, Russ Ferrante, and Mark Levine.

Described as “poetry in motion,"  Philip Vaiman is a concert violinist, dedicated to expressive and imaginative music-making.

 

Mr. Vaiman has captured audiences across Europe, America, and Asia with profound musicality and unlimited technical possibilities.

 

A recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the membership of the National Music Honor Society, Philip has performed in major halls across the world and at international festivals including Huddersfield International Music Festival in England, Spoleto Music Festival in Italy, Music Festival of Pitea in Sweden, Hvar International Summer Festival in Croatia, Soesterberg International Music Festival in Netherlands, and the Bruman Chamber Music Festival in California.

 

Philip Vaiman’s recordings are featured on the soundtracks of award-winning motion pictures, documentaries, and commercials.

 

Philip has recorded and performed with a diverse roster of artists  including Aretha Franklin, Sting, Taylor Swift, Tony Bennet, Pharrell Williams,  Shakira, Michael Jackson, Dido, Andrea Bocelli, Juan Gabriel, Googoosh, Josh Groban,  Amanda McBroom, Dwight Yoakam, Dave Matthew, Brad Mehidau, Nina Whitaker, Sheryl Crow, Lenka,  Tori Amos, Nerina Pallot, Marty Friedman, and Alan Parson, as well as such bands as Pearl Jam, Goo Goo Dolls, Crash Kings, Buffy Clyro, Low Stars, Brocken Bells, KISS and Guns N’ Roses,

Maksim Velichkin is an accomplished cellist, pianist, and harpsichordist who has been active as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra artist among an international circle featuring venerable conductors and headlining classical stars. He has worked with James Levine, Kurt Masur, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Gabor Takacs-Nagy, Sarah Chang, Masaaki Suzuki, Maxim Vengerov, Yuri Bashmet, Andras Schiff, Bobby McFerrin, Joshua Bell, Martha Argerich, Gabriela Montero, Renaud Capucon, Lynn Harrell, Misha Maisky, Frans Helmerson, Sergey Babayan as well as many others. Maksim’s performances have been featured on Radio Suisse Romande, WQED FM in Pittsburgh, National Radio and Television of Uzbekistan. Moreover, as an improviser and interpreter of contemporary and popular music Maksim’s performance and recording career includes credits with Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Billy Childs, Burt Bacharach, Bobby McFerrin, Dwight Trible, Bitter:Sweet, Chris Botti, Bob James, Josh Groban, Red Elvises, Bernadette Peters, Natalie Cole, Alan Silvestri, Richard Thompson and many others. Born in Moldova, Diana Volman holds a master’s degree in piano performance from the Moldova State Conservatory of Music. She is the winner of the sixth international Tchurlyonis Competition and was awarded first prize in the Rachmaninoff All-State Competition.

She finished conservatory with the highest honors, and was offered a place on the faculty upon graduation. During her tenure, she was highly regarded as an interpreter of contemporary Moldavian and Ukrainian composers, and was frequently asked to debut their pieces and serve as editor of their published music. Her teachers include such eminent pianists as Vitaly Margulis, Dimitri Bashkirov, and Yevgeny Shenderovich.

In 1990, Diana immigrated to Los Angeles where she has taken on an active role in the cultural life of the Russian community. As Music Director of the Unity and Diversity Arts Foundation, she has spearheaded myriad events comprising many internationally distinguished artists. A sought-after accompanist, she has given highly acclaimed performances in such venues as the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Thousand Oaks Civic Auditorium, and the San Gabriel Auditorium, collaborating with such eminent artists as Daniel Smith, Mariana Popzlateva, and Timur Abdikeev, among numerous others. She has organized many fundraisers within the Jewish community which bring the sacred art of cantorial music into modern life. In March 2013, she was invited to Jerusalem to record a solo CD of her repertoire, which is set to be released at the end of this year. She enjoys a career as a respected piano teacher whose students has gone on to attend prestigious music conservatories and is frequently asked to judge national competitions for young performers.
