SUSAN SVRCEK:
EDWARD CANSINO & MAHLER/SCHNITTKE Piano Quartets

Pianist SUSAN SVRCEK
http://pianospheres.org/?page_id=61
is the featured artist on the JUNE 20, 2012 program
performing L.A. Times for solo piano
by the late Los Angeles composer EDWARD CANSINO.

"It has been twenty years since Los Angeles'
Rodney King riot. Was that event the spearhead
for Edward Cansino's L.A. Times? We can't
know for sure, since the piano piece was
composed six years later, in 1998. But Cansino
was a true Angeleno, with a great interest in
the distinct cultures within the city. He was
fascinated by the synthesis of these cultures,
as well as their clashes. And fortunately,
he really loved the piano and its wide range
of colors and clashes!" - Susan Svrcek

SUSAN SVRCEK will be joined by

Jacqueline Suzuki - violin
Adriana Zoppo - viola
Simone Vitucci - violoncello

in performing
GUSTAV MAHLER's
brooding one movement Piano Quartet (1876)
and ALFRED SCHNITTKE's
Piano Quartet (1988),
a fascinating reworking of a fragment
of the unfinished second movement of the
Piano Quartet left behind by Mahler.

CHOBRATY: Compositions/Improvisation
by
Michael Vlatkovich - trombone
&
William Roper - tuba

http://roperarts.com/chbrty.htm

Read about the artists at:
http://michaelvlatkovich.wordpress.com
http://roperarts.com

PROGRAM:
Chobraty will select works from the following list:
1. Chobraty - M. Vlatkovich
2.The Fat Dance - M. Vlatkovich
3.Sus scrofa scrofa - W. Roper
4.Spoon the Spoon - M. Vlatkovich
5.16th Street Baptist - W. Roper
6.The Daily Parade Dragging Their
Lives Behind Them - M. Vlatkovich
7.The Embrace - M. Vlatkovich

These compositions by Vlatkovich and Roper
have in common an attempt to meld written
material with improvisation as seamlessly as
possible. Michael's compositions are often
inspired by specific friends, poems and
human behavior. The notes for many of his
themes are derived from a system he has
devised of assigning pitches to letters of the
alphabet. The two compositions by Roper are
based on the wild boars that inhabit the
forests of Bavaria and an historical event
(the bombing of the Baptist church in
Birmingham, AL in 1963).

CHOBRATY is funded in part through
NewMusicUSA's MetLife Creative Connections program.
