Performer Bios:

Nancy Roth, violinist (and violist), is currently the concertmaster of the Culver City Symphony and Marina del Rey Summer Symphony. She is also concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay and a member of the Pasadena Symphony. She is a former member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, was co-principal violist of the Graz Philharmonic in Austria, and served many years as concertmaster of the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Carson-Dominguez Hills Symphony. Roth has been a featured soloist with numerous Southern California orchestras including the Culver City Symphony, Carson Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and Southland Symphony Orchestra. She has given recitals and radio broadcasts in the United States, Austria and Mexico, and is currently a member of the new music group “TEMPO” based at California State University Northridge. Roth is a member of the String Family Players (quintet), which performs educational programs for the Music Center On Tour, and she has been on the faculty of the Max Aronoff Viola Institute Summer Music Festival. She has played baroque violin and viola with James Tyler in the London Early Music Group and Los Angeles Musica Viva. Nancy holds a Bachelor of Music from CSUN, a Master of Music from the Juilliard School and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California.

 

Lorenzo Sánchez, pianist, has enjoyed interpreting music of a variety of styles and nationalities in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Sánchez premiered Robert Guillory’s “Concertino for Piano and Orchestra.” His interest in Polish music led to him giving several lecture performances at the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles. He has performed for African American composer George Walker and Japanese composer Mitsuru Asaka in Hawaii. He has played for several choirs touring Italy, The Vatican and several Filipino community celebration masses at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Los Angeles. Looking toward his heritage, Sánchez has edited and helped publish piano works by Mexican composer Domingo Lobato. He has recorded two CDs of Lobato’s solo piano works, and recently released a CD with clarinetist Virginia Figueiredo. All of his recordings are available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and others. Sánchez holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California.

Performer Bios:

Violinist and educator Sakura Tsai enjoys a multifaceted career having performed nationally and internationally as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician.

A native of Southern California, Dr. Tsai earned degrees (B.M., M.M., and D.M.A.) in Violin Performance from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music where she was honored the prestigious Order of Areté and became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda. Her mentors and teachers included Midori Goto, Kathleen Winkler, Hagai Shaham, and Alice Schoenfeld. Additional fields of study while pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree included Music Theory and Analysis, Violin Pedagogy with Endre Granat, and Kinesiology.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Tsai is Artist Teacher of Violin at the University of Redlands. She is also on faculty at California School of the Arts-San Gabriel Valley, California State Summer School for the Arts, Junior Chamber Music (Inland Empire), and most recently, Montecito International Music Festival. Dr. Tsai makes frequent appearances as an adjudicator and serves as a clinician in schools around Southern California where she mentors aspiring young musicians. In 2018, Dr. Tsai was selected to be the guest conductor of the San Bernardino County High School Honor Orchestra. She coaches instrumentalists in the Walnut Valley Unified School District at both Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools while being actively involved with the Diamond Bar High School Performing Arts Academy Advanced Music Program. In addition, Dr. Tsai has a robust private studio and has previously held faculty positions at Marymount California University and Idyllwild Arts Academy.

As a performer, Dr. Tsai is currently a member of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. She performs in several regional orchestras and has spent summers at the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland) and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Germany) academies, and Music Masters Course Japan (Japan). Dr. Tsai maintains an active career as a chamber musician winning honors at international competitions such as the International Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival and the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. As a violinist with chamber ensembles Definiens, DuselForty58, and the What’s Next? Ensemble, Dr. Tsai has championed works of numerous living composers. An avid performer of contemporary music, extensive collaboration with young composers with these ensembles included residencies and performance projects at institutions such as Idyllwild Arts Academy, California State University, Northridge and Long Beach, University of California, Riverside, and University of Southern California. Dr. Tsai’s solo and ensemble performances have been featured live on world-wide television and radio broadcasts such as classical KUSC, KRTU-FM, Norddeutscher Rundfunk (Germany), and Japan Broadcasting Corporation – NHK (Japan).

 

 

Natalia Hudson has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S. and Europe in numerous festivals and concerts, including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, First Night Charleston, the International Piano Series, the Young Artist Concert Series, the Drayton Hall, the LACC, and Moreno Valley College Concert Series. A native of South Carolina, Natalia was awarded the Isabella Mebane Piano Performance Scholarship to pursue a performance degree under Uruguayan pianist Enrique Graf at the College of Charleston. She continued her artist education at the Conservatory in Madrid, Spain under German-born pianist, Uta Weyand. Her other main influences include Vitalij Margulis (Ukraine), Ilana Vered (Israel), and Oxana Yablonskaya (Russia/Israel). 

Ms. Hudson received her Master’s degree from the University of Southern California and has participated in the World Piano Pedagogy (WPPC), MTNA, and Focus on Piano Literature conferences.  She is also skilled at teaching in Spanish, and has taught master classes, private lessons and dual-immersion classes in Spanish and English. A member of the California and National Music Teacher Associations, Ms. Hudson is a sought-after teacher, jurying competitions and conducting lessons and master classes in numerous music schools and festivals. She currently teaches at her private piano studio, Hudson Conservatory, and serves on the piano faculty at Colburn School of Performing Arts in downtown Los Angeles.

Founder of the Mt. Olive Concert Series in Pasadena and Artistic Director of Melos Music Chamber Ensemble, Natalia firmly believes in the power of music to heal, uplift, and unite people by transcending any boundaries of race, gender, religious, economic or cultural backgrounds.  Her first solo piano album, Balancing Darkness and Light, is being released this year. She is currently thrilled to be on the piano faculty and have her students participate in the elite Oxana Yablonskaya Piano Institute (OYPI) in various parts of the world, including Bulgaria, Spain, Israel, and Los Angeles.

Performer Bios:

 

The Fiato Quartet, winner of the 2022 Beverly Hills National Auditions, was formed in 2008. Its members are Carrie Kennedy and Joel Pargman, violins, Aaron Oltman, viola and Ryan Sweeney, cello. The members of Fiato hold degrees in music performance from the University of Southern California, Rice University, Northwestern University, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

 

The musicians of Fiato currently have active concert careers throughout Southern California. They are members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, New West Symphony, and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. As studio musicians in Los Angeles, they also record music for motion pictures, television and records.

 

Fiato has performed on many chamber music series in the Los Angeles area including The Music Guild, South Bay Chamber Music Society, South Pasadena Library’s Restoration Concert Series, LA Musical Salon, UCLA’s Henry Bruman Chamber Music Festival, Magical Music at the Mill, Brand Associates Music Series, Westwood Public Library series, Edendale Up Close, Live at the Lounge, Glendale’s Music at Noon, LA City College’s Music 152, Pasadena Presbyterian’s Music at Noon, Music at Mimoda, Huntington Garden’s “Music in the Rose Garden,” and the Wine and Wheels series. In August of 2012, Fiato toured Costa Rica as part of the Festival De Musica Credomatic with performances in Guanacaste, San Jose, Hacienda Pinilla, and Villa Caletas. As of 2012, Fiato Quartet is an official ensemble of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

 

In addition to the standard quartet repertoire, Fiato has a passion for new music. Over the years they have premiered ten new string quartets by local composers, including works by Julia Adolphe and Adam Schoenberg. Each member of Fiato brings a unique set of experiences and training to the ensemble, having studied with the Tokyo, Takacs, Guarneri, American, Miami and Emerson Quartets. Program notes:

Today’s concert will feature Beethoven’s Quartet no. 10 in E flat Major, Op. 74, nicknamed “The Harp.” He wrote this quartet in 1809 during a time when battles were going on in and around Vienna during Napoleon’s quest for French domination of northern Europe. In addition to this constant state of unrest, Beethoven had begun to lose his hearing. Yet out of the ashes, Beethoven writes a quartet that is full of light and hope. The first movement begins quietly, shrouded in uncertainty, but then moves into the Allegro main theme which is full of joy. You will hear pizzicato featured throughout this movement, which gave the quartet the nickname, “The Harp.” The movement ends with a thrilling coda featuring a virtuosic part in the first violin while the harp theme is played in the other instruments. This is followed by a beautiful, heart-felt slow movement, and a turbulent scherzo. Beethoven brings the turmoil of the scherzo to a surprising end by gradually dissipating the energy and unwinding the driving rhythm to segue into a charming theme and variations final movement. The variations alternate between graceful beauty and vigorous energy, and after building the excitement, Beethoven ends the quartet in a surprising, understated fashion. This quartet is considered to be one of Beethoven’s masterpieces, and a pillar of the quartet genre. The fact that he was able to produce a work of such brilliance, beauty and hope at a time of turbulence and upheaval in both the world and in his personal life, is a true testament to the healing and transformative power of music.
