PROGRAM NOTES:
Francois Devienne (1759-1803) was an active flutist, bassoonist, and composer in Paris. In 1795 he was appointed administrator and flute instructor at the Paris Conservatory. His instrumental works are mainly written for wind instruments. The 6 Duos for Flute and Viola opus 5 are among the most beautiful and valuable contributions to this unusual duo form.
Ernst Krenek (1900 - 1991)composed the Sonatina for Flute and Viola in Poughkeepsie, New York, on January 6, 1942. It is a dodecaphonic composition incorporating Krenek’s inventive interpretations of the twelve-tone practices of Arnold Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School.
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was born on the island of Fyn in Denmark. In 1881 he began his musical studies in Copenhagen, and in 1892 his First Symphony was completed. However, he never lost his regard for the Danish folk melodies of his childhood. Nielsen's intense occupation with folk songs during 1920- 1921 resulted in the publication of the Folkhojskolens Melodibog a collection of songs primarily for Danish secondary schools and colleges. It was during this period of involvement with folk songs that Nelson wrote the incidental music, Faith and Hope Are Playing, for The Mother, a festival play by Helge Rode. The play was commissioned by the Danish Royal Theater to celebrate the region of Slesvig's reunion with Denmark in 1920, and is a poetic, openly patriotic, fairy-tale play.
Los Angeles composer and violinist Kirstin Fife wrote Indoor Games for the Glendale Noon Concert series during the Covid pandemic. It was first performed on July 1, 2020 for the Glendale Noon Concerts and since has been featured in recital programs for the Santa Barbara Symphony and Community Outreach programs in Northwest Ohio.
